Thoughts on Wikipedia Blackout

Hello, I’m Goocus.

January 19th, 2012. This day turned out to be an important day for me. I was very shocked because I couldn’t search on any words on Wikipedia. They had blacked out the site to protest SOPA/PIPA, and founder Jimmy Wales said “You should do homework on Tuesday.” (The blackout day was Wednesday.) 

Then I realized; whenever we wanted to find out about something, we had always searched on Google and discovered its meaning. No special technique was needed; it was just a simple behavior of the citizens of the Internet society. To us, searching on Google and Wikipedia is just like breathing.

2012年1月19日は、私にとって、忘れられない日になりました。Wikipediaで何も検索できなくなり、とてもショックを受けました。WikipediaはSOPA/PIPA法案に反対するためにストを決行しました。Wikipedia創設者のジミー・ウェールズは「火曜日中に宿題を終わらせておこう」と呼びかけたのです（ブラックアウトの日が水曜日だったので）。

私は、そのとき気付きました。私たちはいつも、何か知りたいことがあればGoogleで検索し、その意味を知ってきました。それは特別なテクなく、ネット社会で生きる我々ののシンプルな行動だったのです。

まるで、呼吸をするかのように、GoogleとWikipediaを検索しているのです。
